As we know it today in most of Andalusia, Holy Week has its origin in the middle of the s. XVI, in the religious practice of the Via Crucis; route that simulated the path followed by Christ, with the Cross on his back, to Mount Calvary;

During this itinerary a variable number of stops (Stations) were made, to experience the most important moments or those with the greatest evangelical content of this Path of the Passion. Later, at the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century, images were carried, which inspired greater devotion in the faithful, dividing this custom into the creation of Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods, which carried out their Penance Stations with the titular images of each one. , multiplying in number in a few years.

If we take into account the fact that Bornos was the place where the first Via Crucis in Spain was carried out, we are saying that Holy Week, in its popular, devotional, brilliant and solemn aspect (the Processions), would have its cradle in our municipality. . But it is not possible to argue that the one who set and sets the standard in this aspect, by tradition, history and splendor, is the City of Seville.

At present, there are four Penitential Brotherhoods in Bornos, which carry out their Penance Stations between Tuesday and Good Friday; although Bornos, faithful to his tradition, celebrates a Via Crucis, on Holy Monday, with the image of the Stmo. Christ of the Chapter, image from the Monastery of Santa María del Rosario, taking a tour of the oldest streets of Bornos.

On Holy Tuesday the Brotherhood of Veracruz processes, with the images of the Stmo. Christ of the same name and Ntra. Sra. de los Remedios, being the characteristic notes of this Brotherhood silence, recollection and sobriety. It makes its departure from the Palacio de los Ribera Castle.

Holy Wednesday is for the Brotherhood of the Flagellation, whose retinue is presided over by two beautiful images of great artistic merit: the Holy Christ of the Flagellation and Our Lady of Greater Pain; It makes its exit from a no less beautiful place, such as the Iglesia de la Resurrección.

The Brotherhood of Jesús Nazareno is the one that moves the greatest devotion, dyeing the early morning of Holy Thursday in its purple color, with its two titular images, Ntro. Father Jesus Nazareno and Our Lady of Sorrows. It leaves from the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán.

As a contrast to the penitential content of the Brotherhoods, Good Friday is lived in Bornos as a big holiday; the Holy Burial processions, with the mystery of the Descent, followed by the Sacred Urn with Jesus Christ dead inside and the image of Our Lady of Solitude closes the procession. It makes its exit from the Hermitage of Calvario.
